TOYOTA IQ 1.33

The Story
Converting Two Toyota iQs
Into Racing Cars

Meet CE11 WYG – aka “Kelly-wig”

(Pronounced Kelly-wig – a playful Welsh twist on “reluctant”)

Kelly-wig is one of two sister cars. The other? A fiery little number called Martini. Both are modified Toyota iQs, transformed into track-ready racers with heart, heritage and a whole lot of hustle.

The Beginning: From Driveway to Dream

Back in 2021, the idea to convert a Toyota iQ into a race car came from JP, an engineer, racer and old friend of Aleks. At the time, JP was living with Aleks while undergoing treatment and hospital appointments for terminal prostate cancer.

He noticed that Aleks’s little runaround, Kelly-wig, had the same wheelbase and engine size as the 1960s Mini Cooper S, the kind he used to race in South Africa & Zimbabwe. That sparked an idea. Could they turn this unassuming little city car into something track-worthy?

A second iQ was bought and named Martini. The mission was simple.
Get both cars racing while JP still had time.

Built on Ingenuity (and Cardboard)

No other iQs had been converted to this degree for motorsport in the UK. So this became a unique challenge, powered by CAD (that’s Cardboard Aided Design), determination, and a whole lot of laughs in between hospital visits.

Sadly, JP passed away on 25th August 2022, before either car made it to the track.
Aleks has continued the project in his honour.

What’s Under the Bonnet?

Both Toyota iQs have been seriously modified:

Custom-designed rear wing and diffuser for aerodynamics

Suspension and brake enhancements for sharper handling

Upgraded air intake and a larger throttle body

Race tuning with an extra 20+ BHP

Fully compliant with Motorsport UK safety standards

There are only three Toyota iQs in the world that have had this level of transformation.
One of them is in Japan and competes in gymkhana and hill climbs.
